Dr. Hicks is excited to be returning for another year as Principal at G.W. Carver Middle School! Prior to joining Carver in the fall of 2021, Dr. Hicks served as an administrator at Thomas Dale HS, Matoaca HS, Midlothian MS, and Elizabeth Davis MS. Dr. Hicks started his education career as a social studies teacher at Thomas Dale High School, where he sponsored several clubs and coached multiple sports.

Dr. Hicks is a proud Chesterfield County Public Schools graduate (Manchester HS). He received his B.A. in History from Hampden-Sydney College, his teaching licensure from the University of Richmond, his M.S. in Sports Management/Leadership from Virginia Commonwealth University and his Ed.D. in Educational Leadership from VCU.

Dr. Hicks and his wife, Heidi, have two children and five grandchildren. He enjoys attending live sporting events, especially at the University of Virginia. Dr. Hicks believes that every student brings value to the school, and it is essential that all students be given the opportunity to reach and exceed their goals. He looks forward to continuing to build a strong connection between the school and community. Go Cougars!

Mrs. Abernethy is privileged to serve as Assistant Principal at Carver Middle School and is committed to being ALL IN for ALL STUDENTS through her leadership and service each and every day.

Born and raised in North Carolina, Mrs. Abernethy earned her Bachelor of Arts in Middle Grades Education from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. After teaching middle school mathematics for many years, she earned a Master of Education in Educational Leadership from Clemson University and transitioned into school administration.

Serving students, their families, and the broader school community has been the heart of her 30-year career in education. Mrs. Abernethy believes meaningful learning and positive school experiences lay the foundation for future readiness, equipping students with the skills and confidence to succeed in high school and beyond.

Mrs. Abernethy and her husband, David, are proud parents of three children who have all benefited from outstanding public schools and dedicated teachers. Outside of school, she enjoys spending time with family and friends—especially on the water or at sporting events.

Ms. Person is eager to serve the Carver community as Assistant Principal! She is a proud graduate of Dinwiddie High School, Richard Bland College, Virginia Commonwealth University, and Virginia State University.

Ms. Person began her educational career in Hopewell City Public Schools teaching 6th-grade math, where her dedication quickly earned her the honor of Rookie Teacher of the Year. After a few years, she joined Team Chesterfield in the fall of 2022 as a 7th-grade math teacher at Elizabeth Davis Middle. After teaching at EDMS, Ms. Person served as the Dean of Students at Robious Middle School for 3 years. In addition to her career in education, Ms. Person proudly served in the United States Army Reserve as a Paralegal Specialist.

Now stepping into her role at Carver, Ms. Person has a student-focused approach to leadership while also valuing the importance of building strong relationships with school staff and families. In addition, she believes in actively uplifting, mentoring, and collaborating with teachers. Outside of school, she loves iced lattes, traveling, spending quality time with her family and friends, and perfecting her newfound hobby on the lanes, bowling!

Dr. “Coach” Johnson is thrilled to return for a second year as the Dean of Students at Carver Middle School.

Since transitioning to leadership, Dr. Johnson has focused on fostering a supportive and collaborative school culture by building strong rapport with parents and students through purposeful, restorative conversations. Additionally, she has expanded her impact by supporting her colleagues as the NTIP Mentor Coordinator—helping new teachers successfully transition into the wonderful world of middle school—while actively listening to and implementing ideas from teachers as part of the Instructional Leadership Team.

In her free time, Dr. Johnson enjoys going on cruises, spending time with her family, making music, writing books, empowering fellow educators through fashion, coaching student-athletes both on and off the field, sneaker shopping, and vlogging with her dog s, Oreo and Brownie.
