Dr. Bryan Hicks, Principal

Dr. Hicks is excited to be returning for his third year serving the Carver Middle School Community! Dr. Hicks started his education career as a social studies teacher at Thomas Dale High School. While at Thomas Dale, he served as the BETA Club sponsor, coached multiple sports, and served as the Assistant Director of Student Activities. Prior to joining Carver, Dr. Hicks served as an administrator at Thomas Dale, Matoaca HS, Midlothian MS, and Elizabeth Davis MS.

Dr. Hicks is a proud Chesterfield County Public Schools graduate (Manchester HS). He received his B.A. in History from Hampden-Sydney College, his teaching licensure from the University of Richmond, his M.S. in Sports Management/Leadership from Virginia Commonwealth University and his Ed.D. in Educational Leadership from VCU.

Dr. Hicks and his wife, Heidi, have two children and two grandchildren. Dr. Hicks enjoys attending live sporting events, especially at the University of Virginia. Dr. Hicks believes that every student brings value to the school, and it is essential that all students be given the opportunity to reach and exceed their goals. He looks forward to continuing to build a strong connection between the school and community. Go Cougars!

Kevin Clear, Associate Principal

After graduating from James Madison University, Kevin started his education career in Hopewell Public Schools as a middle school math teacher. After serving in the City of Hopewell for 7 years, Kevin moved to Matoaca Middle School as a math teacher. He transitioned into administration during the 2021–2022 school year as Matoaca’s Dean of Students. In September 2024, Kevin started as Carver Middle School's Associate Principal. Kevin is solutions driven and works to create a positive teaching and learning experience for teachers and students. Kevin is proud to be a part of the Carver Middle admin team and to serve the students of the Carver community.

Trista Abernethy, Assistant Principal

Mrs. Abernethy is grateful to be joining the Carver Middle School Community as Assistant Principal and looks forward to a great school year.  She was born and raised in North Carolina and attended The University of North Carolina at Wilmington earning a Bachelors in Middle Grades Education.  She was a math teacher for many years before earning her Masters in Educational Leadership from Clemson University and becoming a school administrator.  

Serving students, their families, and the school community has been her life’s work, and she has worked in schools in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Texas throughout her twenty-six-year tenure.

She and her husband, David, are the proud parents of three children who have all benefited from public schools and exceptional teachers!!  When not at school, she enjoys spending time with her family and friends on the water or at a sporting event!

Marissa Parsons, Dean of Students

Ms. Parsons is a veteran educator serving learners and families in diverse communities through the performing arts since 2003. She graduated in 2003 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Music and a Minor in Spanish from Gardner-Webb University in Boiling Springs, North Carolina. In May, 2024 she will complete her Master’s Degree in Administration and Supervision at the University of Virginia. After spending time teaching at various public schools in North Carolina, Ms. Parsons moved to Lima, Peru. In Peru she served as the K-12 Music teacher at the International Christian School of Lima. Upon her return to the US in 2013, she settled in Chester, Virginia and taught music in Chesterfield County Public Schools at James River High School, Robious Elementary School, and Meadowbrook High prior to her arrival at Carver. Ms Parsons passionately pursues equity, cultural inclusivity, and new ways to drive achievement for all members of the learning community.

Dionne Crump, Dean of Students

Mrs. Crump is excited to be joining the Carver Middle School Cougar family as Dean of Students. She is looking forward to working with the students and their families to make it a great school year. Mrs. Crump is a career switcher and has seven years of educational experience. Prior to her current role as Dean of Students, she served as the Coordinator of Special Education at A. M. Davis Elementary School, PBIS/SEL and 504 Coordinator with Chesterfield Virtual School, and taught at Hening Elementary School. She is a native of North Chesterfield, Virginia and attended George Mason University earning a Bachelors in Government and International Politics with a minor in Legal Studies. Mrs. Crump earned her Master’s in Education with a concentration in Special Education from Virginia Commonwealth University, and is currently working on her Educational Leadership Endorsement from Longwood University. 

Working with students and building relationships with them and their families is what she considers her most important work. She tries to work hard to provide support and strategies for students to help them be their best selves. 

Mrs. Crump and her husband Coshawn, Sr. have four beautiful children who are ages 10, 15, 17 and 17. When she is not at school, she enjoys spending time with her family and friends doing various activities such as bowling, shopping, visiting restaurants and enjoying family trips and cookouts.
